A Bit of a Follow Up

I'm still waiting on those pics that Aaron took while doing the mod, otherwise I would have posted them. As soon as he gets them to me, I'll get them posted.

Upon posing further tests, the brick walls on our practice space seem to be the limit on where I get signal with the newly modded XDS95. That said, the mod can be chalked up to an improvement to an extent, because the building is 1600 square-feet, and I was getting signal from the furthest distance from corner to corner. There's some pathagrium theorum stuff that gets involved here, but you get the idea. Definitely more than the 10-20' I was getting in the same building.

The real test will be my next show. This will be a 4-day festival in June, with possibility of playing 2 or more different locations. I also have a pair of 7dBi antennas that I can try out. If it weren't for the fact that these are way too big for my board, they'd probably be in there already.

  1. I know it's been about a year since you've posted about this but do you have any more information? I have one of these wireless units and want to do this myself

    1. I don't really have more info, as the actual mod was done by my guitarist, who never got the pictures of the modification process to me. We used this blog entry as a starting point: http://xds95modification.blogspot.com/

We followed the directions given on that blog. The mod we did used antennas from an old Linksys, as the antennas used in the original mod were only available online, and I had an old Linksys laying around for parts. Due to the size of the antennas on the Linksys, we moved the mounting to the battery compartment area, as I never use batteries with the receiver.

As far as how well the mod works, I get more range than I did before, but it's not to the level of the higher-end rackmount units that are available, and it varies on the venue and how much interference the crowd generates with cell phones (something John Nady never had to worry about when he developed the concept).

  3. Hi Dave,

I am the guy who made that mod and wrote that blog. I am very happy that it is guiding you guys arround the world.

I just wanted to mention that the db of the antenna is irrevelant because the power of the unit is limited. Also these antennas are not the best ones for this frequency but this was all I got which can be provided easly from a router or a wirless modem. So 2db antennas will be enough or maybe more than enough.

Nobody should expect a rack mount system range from this unit. I made this mod because I was getting dropouts even in a suqare meter range. Now I am on another mod with this pedal which will be a suprise for you all but this mod is not about the range of the unit.

    Regards,

    Murathan
